I remember Elmer Knowlton telling of this snowmobile trip. Elmer and Buzz Caverly took a Ski-doo and a Moto-Ski to the top of Katahdin in the late sixties. It was late in the season when there was a good crust to run on. They approached Katahdin from the Northwest side. Elmer said if you looked at Katahdin from the top of Powerhouse Hill you could see how the route of travel would be easier. There were places where they had to lift the sleds up over ledges and other places where they would lean into the mountain and the outside ski would just be dangling out in free air. I would guess there have been very few snowmobiles ever photographed at this location! Thank you to Donn Knowlton and Pete McPheters for this photo. – Rick Levasseur.
