One of the common predicaments when riding Maine’s remote snowmobile trails is the question of where to go, when you have to go!
Most of the gas stops, like Abol Store and Kokadjo, offer some type of facility. But once on the open trail, riders are left to improvise – generally easy for men, not so for women.
Here a few spots to keep in mind:
- 109 Trail (Katahdin Loop) – 16 miles into the interior of the Jo Mary Forest, 3 miles east of the junction with the PP Crossover Trail.
- Gauntlet Falls Trail – at the bridge above the falls.
- Yoke Ponds Trail – at Pleasant Pond Campsite #2.
While there are other such spots, they are generally buried in snow and not accessible. These are kept open courtesy of the Jo Mary grooming crew, and most importantly the management of the KI/Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest.
Note: You can’t always depend on TP being available, so it is always a good idea to carry some wherever you travel in the Maine woods.
